Adsl Router Overview
Asymmetric Digital Service Line is a communication technology company that fastens the transmission of different data. It fastens communication over telephone lines through a voice modem. It is the most common type of connection that is provided to home users. It is a type of broadband that is used to connect the internet. ADSL helps data over copper telephone lines as compared to traditional modems.
Functions of ADSL
One of the foremost and basic functions of ADSL is to provide Ethernet over telephone lines so that a user can exchange data. It is the exchanging of data between a PC that is at a customer site and the system that is at the service provider’s site. A protocol such as PPTP or PPoE or PPoA is usually used for validation purposes. Authentication is made possible using these protocols. Upon completing the authentication, the local PC is granted permission to connect using the public IP address. Although the new fiber technology provides a much faster connection, ADSL continues to be one of the most popular connections due to its flexibility. A microfilter is usually needed to connect the ADSL and the telephone line simultaneously.
ADSL Router
An ADSL router is also known as a DSL modem. It connects with a computer or a modem with a telephone line that would provide internet connection. It usually connects a single computer through an Ethernet. It is basically a box with RJ11 jack, which allows connection to a typical telephone line. It also comes with a USB jack that allows connection via a USB cable. This connects the computer without any port. Along with line, wireless DSL connections are always available, which come with antennas that allow it to connect a wireless point of access, so the computers easily connect to different devices and form a wireless network.
LED Lights Indications
The router usually has certain LED lights incorporated to show the current status of communications. Following are some of the lights and what they represent:
- Power Light: specifies whether the device is on-off and has no power.
- Ethernets light: this light rarely stays stable or flashes. It shows that the ether light is connected with a computer and is in use. This light is usually placed over the Ethernet jack.
- Internet Light: the DHCP and the IP addresses are initialized and are functioning is specified through this light. This light usually stays stable and does not flash. This is to ensure that the internet is connected to the computer.
- Wireless: this light is present only on DSL modems. The light ensures that the connections which are wireless are determined and are running properly.
- DSL Lights: this light is a steady one as it indicates that the modem is connected with the local exchange of the telephone. New models of the device have one light over every connection to indicate that it is connected and working.
Comparison
The DSL modem performs the functions as the Voice modem that is highly popular in this century. However, it is different than that device as it transfers data 10 or up to 20 times faster than the voice band modems. While the voice band modems required a specific number to make a connection and connect no telephones calls could do, the DSL modem is the complete opposite. It requires no number because it is always “on,” and it does not interfere with the normal telephone functioning. Moreover, the data speed of voice bands was limited to 50k/bits, while the DSL modems’ speed ranges till megabytes.
Review
The modern DSL routers provide the fastest connections and the most convenient data transfers. It does not lag and does not judder. It is one of the most common devices used in today’s world.
