DVI Cable Overview
Digital Video Interface is a type of cable that forms a connection between two devices to display videos. A DVI cable is usually used to form connections between a DVI supporting device (that could be a laptop or computer) and a monitor screen (could be a projector) where the video is displayed.
Forming a connection
A Digital Video Interface provides access to the video card that connects to the port on the larger screen projectors or LCD monitors. It provides a good quality video display with better resolution. And helps you enjoy web videos on a larger screen without any hassle.
Is it any better?
Before the invention of DVI, a VGA (Video Graphics Array) cable was used to display videos. The disadvantage of VGA was that it projected a low-quality resolution. But with the creation of Digital Video Interface, this problem was sorted as a higher resolution was available. Some CRT monitors still use VGA ports.
Types
DVI cable types include DVI-A cable, DVI-I cable and DVI-D cable. All are discussed below.
DVI-I cable
can be identified with having four pins around its flat pin. It is an all-rounder cable as it carries digital and analog signals both. This means it can be used with screens that use analog signals by converting the digital signal to a tractable lower quality signal and also from digital to digital.
DVI-A cable
is used to convert digital signals to analog signals. It is used in devices with VGA ports, for example, CRT monitors. It can be identified as having four pins around a flat pin. With DVI-A cable, it is imminent that video resolution will be compromised as it converts digital to analog. This is a VGA to DVI cable.
DVI-D cable
has a flat pin only. It has digital to digital signal compatibility. It provides the best quality resolution and image quality. The video quality is not compromised in this type of connection. This cable connects LCD screen to a computer’s port.
What to use
- When buying a DVI cable, it is essential first to check the type of port available with the device. Some devices have both analog and digital ports. This means they allow both forms of connections. For such devices, use DVI-A cables.
- For devices that have digital connection ports, use DVI-D cables.
- Now an HDMI to DVI cable is also available.
