Memory Cards Overview
In the current times where technology has invaded almost every field of life, we see that our lives have become easier and simpler. In the old times, when there was not much introduction to technology, everything had to be done by the human mind.
There were chances of error and mistakes as well. But the innovations and the advancements that scientist and researchers have made in the Information Technology has left the world stunned.
Before this human mind had to store and memorize all the details concerning almost everything out there, this practice was, of course, full of errors and problems. But then the invention of a small chip made everyone at peace.
This chip is called the memory card. A memory card is also known as a memory cartridge.
This small memory card does a big job.
What Is A Memory Card?
A memory card is an electronic device that is used for storing data and information. This data is comprised of digital information.
Since memory card is used to store digital information, thus, it is required in the electronic devices. It can be incorporated in the electronic devices that are easy to move like
- Mobile phones
- Digital cameras
- Computers
- Portable media players
- Synthesizers
- Digital pianos
- Tablets
- Video game consoles
- Electronic keyboards
- PDAs
And the list goes on!
Types
Since the invention of memory cards has given amazing benefits to the users, its advantages cannot be ignored. To get even better outputs from the memory card in the form of storage space, different types have been launched of the memory card.
Majorly three different types have yet been introduced to the memory card.
These three types are
- SD
- SDHC™
- SDXC™
SD means secure digital while SDHC™ means SD high capacity and SDXC™ means SD extended capacity.
SD Memory Card
The capacities of the SD memory card have a range starting from 128MB to 2GB.
This type of memory card works in all the devices that are supportive of all three types of memory cards that are mentioned above.
SD High Capacity (SDHC™) Card
The capacities of SD High Capacity card which is an SD™ memory card, has a range starting from 4GB to 32GB.
This SD High Capacity card is not compatible with all kinds of host devices that are electronic. Rather it has a particular set of electronic devices in which it can be incorporated and taken use of. Most generally, the electronic host devices or the readers that are manufactured after the year 2008 have the compatibility for the SD High Capacity card.
To confirm the compatibility for the SD High Capacity card in a device, one must search for a logo on the host devices or the cards.
The basis of the SD High Capacity (SDHC™) card is specification 2.0 of SDA.
SD Extended Capacity (SDXC™) Card
The capacities of SD Extended Capacity (SDXC™) card which is an SD™ memory card, has a range starting from 64GB to 2TB.
This type of memory card is the most upgraded version of all the memory cards yet introduced. Thus it is different from the basic standard SD memory cards.
SD Extended Capacity card has another file system that is different from the rest of the memory cards. It is called exFAT. Thus it is not compatible with all the electronic host devices that usually have the compatibility for the other two SD memory cards.
Mostly the host devices that have been manufactured after the year 2010 have the compatibility for this particular memory card, i.e., SD Extended Capacity card.
In a nutshell, memory cards have played a very vital role in making the storage process easier and simpler for all of those who use portable electronic gadgets.
